WV Secretary of State Kris Warner hosted two student leaders from Spring Valley High School (SVHS) in Wayne County as his honored guests at the State Capitol. Macy Smith and Alexander Ringkamp, both members of the 2025 graduating class at SVHS, were recommended by their principal to represent their school as Honorary Secretaries of State for their efforts to register members of the senior class to vote. Nominations for Honorary Secretaries of State are only accepted by those high schools that qualify for the Jennings Randolph Award. To qualify for the Award, a West Virginia high school must host a student-led effort to register at least 85% of their eligible senior class to vote. Secretary Warner said, "I am extremely proud of these students for their efforts in the voter registration process. Their work illustrates the importance of education, participation, and the power of young people in making a meaningful impact in our communities." Started by the WV Secretary of State's Office in 1994, the Jennings Randolph Award for Civic Engagement commemorates West Virginia's late U.S. Senator Jennings Randolph’s legacy as the Father of the 26th Amendment. One of the defining moments in voting rights history, the 26th Amendment was passed in 1971. The Amendment lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, an effort Senator Randolph had first championed 29 years earlier in the U.S. House of Representatives. In addition to a morning spent with Secretary Warner in his office and a tour of the State Capitol, Ringkamp and Smith were recognized on the House floor by one of their representatives, Delegate Michael Amos, for their service to the state and community.

🧣Students in 3rd grade at Kellogg Elementary have been working on adjectives, and recently finished up their lesson by making winter sweaters. Students came up with adjectives for a descriptive writing assignment. 🤝 5th graders worked with the younger students to edit their work and wrote encouraging notes to their younger counterparts! The writings and sweaters went up on the bulletin board after the lesson. They look great!

📐 Building real world math skills in the classroom! Seniors in Mrs. Raines' math class at Wayne High School completed a Trigonometry Architecture Project where students had to create a blueprint and build a model home while using correct mathematical calculations. 🧐 Skills such as calculating angles using inverse trig functions, scale factors, Pythagorean theorem, and using precise measurements were all used in this project. Overall, students had a great time learning valuable math skills they can use in the future.

🎃 October means it is time to breakout the pumpkins. Second graders at East Lynn Elementary read a book about pumpkins during their centers. 🌱 Afterwords, students planted pumpkin seeds and experimented with light, soil, warmth, and water to see which elements are essential for plant growth! Each group is withholding one of those four elements as part of the experiment. The class wrote down their predictions for the pumpkin seed they think will have success. 🔆 💧

Jayden Robertson (Crum) and Will Jones (Wayne PreK) were nominated and selected as Marshall Junior Captains for the 2024 football season. If you watched the rainy September 28th victory against Western Michigan, you may have seen Jayden front and center at the coin toss. He was able to stay dry and enjoy the rest of the game from sky box seats! Similarly, Will was all smiles while being honored on the 20-yard line on the October 5th game against Appalachian State. Both students were nominated for the hard work they put in every week at Cabell's Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic. They each received an official Marshall University football jersey and were invited to tour Marshall's athletic complex and attend a practice. Thank you, Marshall University, for honoring two of our Wayne County Students. Join us in congratulating these remarkable students for their well-deserved recognition. Their achievements inspire us all and highlight the incredible potential within our community. #WayneCountyProud #StudentSuccess #CommunityExcellence

😎 In math centers on Tuesday, East Lynn 2nd graders broke out the headbands to learn about place values! 🎉 Each student wore a mystery 3-digit number on their head while their partner either wrote it in expanded form or built it with place value blocks. The challenge? The student had to guess the number on their head! 😂 They learned so much about place value skills while also having lots of laughs! What a great lesson!
