Buffalo Middle School had a great showing at the State BETA Convention! They placed in 14 of 19 categories. Next up, Nationals! Congratulations BMS BETA!
First Graders at Lavalette Elementary had a special visit from Sarah Fox, who works with AmeirCorps. During her presentation, students worked in groups to investigate the inside and outside of locally grown pumpkins. Students measured the height and circumference of the pumpkins and counted the seeds too! This was a great way to put math skills into action!

The Wayne County Board of Education recognized school counselor Jamie Smith from Buffalo Elementary School at a recent meeting as part of the employee recognition program. Jamie was nominated by her co-workers for starting a clothing closet at the school and for her work ethic and the pride she brings to work every day!
What a season! Wayne High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams qualified for and competed in the West Virginia State Meet over the weekend. Congratulations to Coach Rutherford and the entire WHS Cross Country Team!
Fort Gay PK-8 was the recipient of VH1's Save The Music Foundation award. As one of the winners Fort Gay is receiving $40,000 worth of musical instruments. Music classes teach students a variety of different skills, and is a great hands on way to learn.
WCS is grateful to VH1 for continuing this program in West Virginia and Wayne County! Thank you Randall Reid-Smith, curator for the West Virginia Department of Arts, culture, and history, for his efforts in supporting music programs in Wayne County! We can't wait to see what Fort Gay Students do with their new instruments.
Several Wayne County Elementary School students went to the Huntington Area Regional Theatre today for a showing of Spookley the Square Pumpkin! Spookley always looks for and finds the best in others, and he helps everyone in need. It was a great show for our students!
Last week, Wayne Elementary School the nation-wide Rock Your School event. The initiative encourages outside-the-box educational experiences to engage students and bring learning to life. Students ended the week with a pumpkin drop contest! Each class designed a box to see if their pumpkin could survive the drop. You could see the excitement in their faces and hear it in their voices. Thank you to AEP for providing the bucket truck to drop the pumpkins.
Fort Gay PK-8 recently held a banquet for students who had a 4.0 cumulative GPA for the 2021-2022 academic year. Congratulations to all of these students for their hard work!

State Superintendent David Roach visited Wayne County Schools this week and participated in a data meeting with Crum PK-8. Mr. Roach also visited classrooms at Wayne Elementary School
Tolsia High School 9th grade math students were recognized for meeting the goal they set for MATHia. They got a nice reward too, homemade brownies from their teacher Mrs. Marcum! Keep working hard!
Wayne Elementary Kindergartener Dannika Smith was the winner of the 5th Annual State Fire Marshal Fire Safety Poster Contest! Her drawing is going to be in the fire safety calendar which will be out later this year. West Virginia State Fire Marshal Ken Tyree was at the celebration today along with a letter of congratulations from Governor Justice. Congrats Dannika, WES is PROUD of you!
Wayne County High School Math Teachers are having countywide professional learning today. They are working collaboratively to connect WV standards to SAT standards. It is a great group of teachers doing great work on behalf of Wayne County Students!
Ms. Hatfield's Biology Class at Spring Valley High School are using the dichotomous keys to identify tree/leaf species!
Ceredo-Kenova Elementary School students are working on Project Lead the Way Modules this week. Mrs. Shreve's Kindergarten class is studying pushing and pulling. They played tug of war and then went on a scavenger hunt for things we push and pull everyday. Afterwords, they presented their pictures to the class. Learning by doing is a fantastic opportunity for students!
Twenty-five Fort Gay Pk-8 7th and 8th graders participated in a Student Leadership Academy at the Clay Center in Charleston with Gear UP. The students got the opportunity to join with other schools around the state to explore different colleges, talk about over coming diversity, and following their dreams. The students had a great time and learned so much to help them with their future endeavors.
