Personnel from across Wayne County are taking part in the "2023 Administrators Academy" this week. Multiple speakers from Get Your Teach On will be discussing leadership, data driven teaching, student engagement, and much more!
The FBI's Pittsburgh Division is hosting a Teen Academy this fall for Juniors and Seniors. This one-day, interactive, program will introduce students to the many different career paths offered by the FBI. Students will also learn the importance of making good choices online, talk about how the FBI investigates cyber crimes, and get a hands-on training with the Evidence Response Team. More than 20 Wayne County Students have been taking courses at the Smith Academy of Salon Professionals in Lavalette this summer! Students are putting in hundreds of hours this summer at the salon, and will move to online course work during the school year. After completing this course, students will only be few hours away from earning their cosmetology license. We love seeing our students working towards their goals! Thank you to the Smith Academy for offering this program to students in Wayne County!
Congratulations to Wayne High School's Bass Fishing Team for securing their place in the 2023 Strike King Bassmaster High School Championship next week! Under the tutelage of coach Chris Allen; Dillon May and Ethan Allen are headed to Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S.C. for the 3 day competition. Good luck boys!
WCS BETA Students recently traveled to the 2023 National BETA Convention in Louisville! The students did outstanding and had a great time learning and competing. Several WCS Students placed in the top 10 nationally, in their respective categories!

The 2023 WCS Summer Exploration Camps have been great! We are thankful for our incredible staff who go above and beyond to make these camps exciting and engaging for their students. Learning and making memories is a great way to spend a summer day!
Dunlow Elementary Principal Kim Mills created an easy to navigate calendar for the 2023-2024 school year! Early release days, grading periods, spring break, etc. are all on this calendar. We hope everyone is enjoying summer break!
WCS Summer Exploration Camps are in full swing in several schools across the county. This week, students at Genoa Elementary are learning about our wonderful state! Students are exploring Mountain State Heritage, using KWL charts to share what they already know about West Virginia, and digging in the garden to plant flowers! The students are having a great time and learning along they way!
Wayne County teachers have returned to the classroom to be active learners! Over 190 Wayne County teachers participated in professional learning last week at the WCS Summer Academies. Teachers engaged in sessions on writing, foundational literacy, early number concepts, early geometric concepts, as well as statistics and probability. Thank you to all WCS teachers and staff for making last week's summer academy a success!
The West Virginia School Building Authority is awarding Wayne County Schools $1 million for the Wayne Elementary School PreK Classrooms addition project. The district is using local monies to fund the remaining $500,000.
This project is going to move the existing Wayne Elementary PreK Classrooms from its current site to the main WES building. Having all WES staff and students in one building provides additional safety, allows all teachers to collaborate with each other, and ends the need to deliver meals from the main WES building to the Prek site.
“I appreciate the SBA seeing the value and importance of this project,” said Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander. “The SBA’s ongoing support of WCS projects has been vital to allow the district to complete a number of safety upgrades and building renovations at several schools in the district.”
WCS is looking forward to having our youngest Pioneers join their counterparts at WES.
Starting TODAY, June 12th! The Wayne County/Valley Health School Base Centers are open two days a week at WHS and SVHS. The clinics are offering, child well visits, immunizations for upcoming 7th and 12th grade students, sports physicals, and other healthcare needs. The clinic is also providing a behavioral health therapist during their summer hours.

The Kenova Pumpkin House is calling all students (Pk-12) in West Virginia to start preparing for the 2023 Giant Pumpkin Contest. Submissions are due October 21st, 2023. Buffalo Elementary School Students took a trip to Charleston today to see the Dirty Birds in action. There were a few home runs, great in game entertainment, and of course delicious food. The home team came up one run short, but the students had a blast! Thank you Dirty Birds for having us, until next time!
This is the second school year The Wayne County Pledge Scholarship has been available for WCS 8th Graders. At last night's WCSBOE meeting, 25 8th grade students received the $1,000 scholarship. This money can be used to further their education after high school. Congratulations to this year's 8th grade recipients, you earned this scholarship. WCS would also like to thank the Michael and Katherine Lewis Foundation for funding The Wayne County Pledge!
It's graduation week! Tolsia High School kicks off graduation this Friday at 7:00 at the school. The Wayne High School Commencement begins this Saturday at 10:00 and Spring Valley High School Seniors finish out the weekend at 2:00. Both ceremonies on Saturday are being held at the Mountain Health Arena! We are looking forward to celebrating our seniors and their families this weekend. Congratulations 2023 WCS Graduates!
